The 5 most beautiful hikes in the Zillertal

The Zillertal is a true paradise for hiking. Kaltenbach is the perfect hiking hotel, with its central location making it an ideal starting point for the diverse hiking tours in the Zillertal. Here, you can find the most popular hikes and tips for hiking in the Zillertal from experienced mountain guide Stephan.

The most famous hike in the Zillertal – Olperer Bridge

The Neumarkter Runde in the Zillertal Hauptkamm Nature Park, above the Schlegeis Reservoir and the alpine village of Ginzling, is one of the most beautiful mountain hikes in the Zillertal. The highlights of this tour are numerous and impressive. First, the landscape is captivated by the fascinating high moor at Unterschrammach, with its imposing rock cliffs and glaciers. Next, you’ll follow a breathtaking high-altitude trail offering grand panoramic views, along with the majestic wayside shrine of the Holy Madonna.

The next highlight is the Olperer Bridge, the Instagram hotspot of the Alps, which hovers above the Schlegeis Reservoir and is located near the Olperer Hut.

What makes this hike particularly fascinating is the contrast between the tranquility and solitude of the Neumarkter Runde and the many hikers who visit the Olperer Bridge in search of the perfect vacation memory.

The most athletic hike – Long-distance hiking on the Hannemann Trail

For sporty mountain hikers, the tour from the Zillergründl Reservoir via the Plauener Hut and along the most beautiful high-altitude trail in the Zillertal Alps – the Hannemann Trail – is an unforgettable nature experience. The vastness of the landscape and the solitude on the alpine paths make this hike truly special.

The highlight of the tour is the Heilig-Geist-Jöchl, a magical place offering stunning panoramic views into South Tyrol and over the Zillergrund all the way to the source of the Ziller River. A true feast for the senses.

The most spectacular hike in the Zillertal – Berliner Hütte

A masterpiece of alpinism, the Berliner Hütte, located at 2,042 meters above sea level, is one of the most spectacular buildings in the Alps and the only mountain hut in Austria that is listed as a historical monument. The spacious, wood-paneled dining hall is especially impressive. The hike along the Berliner Höhenweg, which passes through the Zemmgrund and several 3,000-meter peaks, is a true adventure. The Schwarzsee, located high above the Berliner Hütte, makes this mountain tour an unforgettable experience.

The best family hike in the Zillertal – Valentinskapelle

A true hidden gem in the Zillertal, the Valentinskapelle in the Zillergrund, is a must-do, especially for active families with children, when the weather is good. Well-trained hikers can start the ascent directly from the Gasthof Bärenbad, while those less experienced can take the Zillertal bus line to the Zillergründl dam and begin the steep ascent in serpentine curves through the avalanche barriers. The climb covers 450 meters of elevation, and the view of the turquoise reservoir, framed by the impressive mountain backdrop, is absolutely stunning.

Soon, the beautiful Valentinskapelle, built from stones, appears on a mountain plateau – a true power spot in the Zillertal. The return journey follows the same route. Important: This hike should be avoided in bad weather or after rain, as the path over alpine meadows can become slippery and dangerous. After the hike, a stop at the Adlerblick restaurant at the Zillergründl dam is highly recommended.

The most beautiful mountain hike in the Zillertal – Wildgerlostal

The hike from the hamlet of Finkau through the Wildgerlostal to the Zittauer Hut is, in my opinion as a long-time mountain guide in the Zillertal, one of the most beautiful mountain tours. The ascent along the spectacular Wildgerlosbach river is already impressive. Soon, one of the most stunning rock formations in the Zillertal unfolds – the Wildgerlos group, with the Gabler and Reichenspitze peaks.

Upon reaching the Zittauer Hut, you can admire the picturesque reflections of the Lower Gerlossee, and the view of the Upper Gerlossee is a true feast for the eyes, set against an awe-inspiring mountain backdrop. A special highlight is the ascent to Rosskopf (2,845 m), which is manageable for experienced and well-trained mountain hikers. The panoramic view over the Hohe Tauern mountains is unique and rewards the effort of the climb. The descent follows the same route, and the total hiking time is about 7 hours from the Finkau parking lot.

Insider tip: The hike in the Wildgerlostal is one of the most beautiful Bike & Hike tours in the Zillertal!
